New supermarket to fill a void in Urasoe

Date Posted: 2006-02-24

Urasoe residents have been traveling farther to get their groceries since a major supermarket closed its doors last November.

That will soon change, as Ryobo announced plans for a new grocery store and more in Urasoe. The lights went dark on Daieiís Urasoe Branch last November, citing declining sales.

Ryobo President Tsuyoshi Ishimine says the new building will house Ryobo supermarket on the first floor, a clothing store on the second, and a One Hundred Yen Shop on the third level. The well known Maruei clothing store is expected to bring hundreds of additional customers to the facility, says Eisaku Orita, the companyís president.

Ishimine hasnít announced the opening date yet, but confirms the 11,217 square meter building will have plenty of parking. The building owner is from Nago City.

Daiei Naha Branch closed more than a year ago, and then Urasoe. The building owner is still trying to determine whatís next, saying ďwe havenít decided yet. We are trying to research the options.Ē He acknowledged that supermarkets come and go, so he and his company arenít sure what type occupant to try and attract.
