Safecracker scores in Ginowan home heist

Date Posted: 2006-02-10

A Ginowan doctor who thought his safe was keeping his money safe is now out millions of yen.

The doctor told police “My money is gone” after a thorough check of his two-story home last Friday evening. Quizzed by police, the doctor says the 35cm wide, 20cm tall safe was hidden in a closet in his bedroom “where nobody should know I kept it.” He tells police the safe was fine on Thursday night, but missing 24 hours later when he checked it.

“I keep my safe inside the closet, and there was Y40,000,000 ($347,825) inside. It is missing,” said the distraught doctor. His wife confirmed seeing the same at the same time last Thursday. The couple says almost every window in the house was locked, and it didn’t appear there was anything else missing or out of place.

Three family members had been in the home on Friday, but say they were all out between 7~8pm. The doctor says there were no damage or forced entry marks on the home.

Police say they’re puzzled how a thief would know to look for money inside a closet. They say all the clothes were still in the closet, suggesting the thief knew the safe was in the closet.
