Marijuana cookies lead to five arrests

Date Posted: 2006-02-10

A mainland Japanese family and an Okinawan are in jail on Iriomote island, charged with possession of hashish.

Police say Susumi Furuyoshi and his wife Midori, along with daughters Rina, 25, and 23-year-old Kayoko, were arrested along with Okinawan Ken Shiroma. The 48-year-old Furuyoshi, a Hiroshima merchant, and the others were accused of violating Japan’s Cannabis Control Law. Midori Furuyoshi, 46, and the two girls were picked up at a hotel on the southern Okinawa island where they were staying January 26th.

A doctor at a local clinic alerted police after treating a hotel employee a day earlier, following a diagnosis of stomach ailment triggered by the illicit drugs. The employee told the doctor, and the police, he’d eaten only cookies given to him by the hotel guests.

Police made the arrests after Furuyoshi admitted the cookies contained marijuana. His wife denied the allegations, telling officers she was not aware the cookies had pot cooked inside. Shiroma, Rina Furuyoshi’s boyfriend, says he made the cookies at his Hiroshima home. The police investigation continues as to where the marijuana originated.
