Thugs assault man after dating site call

Date Posted: 2006-01-27

A university student thinking he’d arranged a date through an internet site and after a cell phone call found himself beaten up by a group of men.

Internet sites are popular with junior and senior high school girls, who attract attention of older boys and men, then make contact through email and text mail on cellular phones. Those contacts typically lead to meetings and sexual encounters.

In Okinawa City, the college student had used his mobile phone to set up a date, and went to meet the girl. When he arrived at the meeting spot, he was met not by a girl, but by six men who proceeded to beat him and steal his wallet before escaping. Police say they have no clues in the case.

School officials are expressing concerns over the internet and cellular phone practices, noting there’s little they can do to protect the youngsters when they get into dangerous situations.

“Students all have mobile phones,” said one teacher. “And it’s the mobile phone culture where even in the classroom they are checking email. Almost everyone.”

Parent Teacher Association surveys indicate the popularity of junior and senior high school girls using phones to make contacts which lead to sexual meetings is rising. One study found one-quarter of the 14 and 15-year-old girls were using the practice to make money for buying clothes and CD’s.
