Excitement at Zamami as whale season starts

Date Posted: 2006-01-24

Wow! Great jumping!

Whale watchers are excited at the action along Zamami Island as the 2006 whale season get under way. Local residents are pleased the season kicked off with visits by several large whales, who’re showing off for spectators.

Sunday there were two whales jumping together, twisting through a series of maneuvers that made some observers feel they were watching a whales show. A Whales Watching Association staff member, Kana Toyama, took pictures of the active whales. The staffer called the moves ‘breaching’ which means the whale’s body rises high out of the water, then arcs in a tall jump.

One whale watcher said it looked like the ocean mammals were dancing, exercising and playing.” The whale watching season is expected to run through March.
