Flowers campaign being pitched to all Okinawans

Date Posted: 2006-01-24

As the colorful season for flowers approaches, Okinawa leaders are encouraging citizens to plant or display flowers in every home.

Beginning this weekend, and running through mid-May, flower blossoms of all sorts will begin blooming across Okinawa’s islands, adding beauty to the roadways, mountains, field, gardens and homes. The Okinawa Flower Carnival began this week, with Palatte Kumoji in downtown Naha City hosting the kickoff with Miss Cherry girls and volunteers giving away flower seeds and seedlings.

Tomonobu Nakayoshi of the Okinawa Convention Bureau says “we want to make Okinawa more of a tourism place. Let’s make Okinawa beautiful by having every family displaying flowers.” Nakyoshi, who is also a Flower Carnival Committee member, says he’d like to see “at least on pot of flowers on display for every person” on Okinawa.

Companies across Okinawa, hearing the “one pot … one person” flowers campaign idea, have jumped forth to support the concept. They’ve been giving away flower planters and seedlings to committee members to get things rolling, and want to spur the public to participate.

Okinawa Prefecture officials note there will be all sorts of events and programs during the five-month flowers season. Information is available from the Prefecture, and from the Okinawa Convention and Tourist Bureau.
