Hundreds line up for New Year’s Day shopping deals

Date Posted: 2006-01-05

The lure of special bargains New Year’s Day sent thousands of shoppers scurrying into the Okinawa streets early in the morning.

Queues formed at many department stores in the pre-dawn hours, with shoppers wanting to be first for chances at Fukubukuro, lucky shopping bags offered by stores. The lucky bags are sealed, so customers buy because they’re calculating to get something special. Inside the bags are products worth many times the purchase price. Some bags sold for Y20,000~30,000, but inside were goods valued at Y50,000.

At Mitsukoshi Department Store in Naha City, more than 700 lined up for a shot at one of 300 Fukubukuro bags. A store manager says inside the lucky bags this year were Tokyo-Okinawa airline tickets, plasma televisions, Hokkaido travel coupons, expensive clothes, toys, watches and jewelry. The bags were on sale for Y10,000. The bags sold out in less than 20 minutes.

Ryubo Department Store reports selling out its 500 lucky bags within 30 minutes.

Some customers complained their bags were not too lucky because clothes inside were the wrong size. Store officials were not allowing exchanges on lucky bag apparel. In one case, a man complained his lucky bag contained jewels which he can’t use. He also had toys, but says he doesn’t have any kids to give them to.

Only a couple stores reported their lucky bags as unlucky. They said the bags appeared to be in disfavor this year, and they had bags leftover.
