Taiwanese fishing boat challenges Japanese

Date Posted: 2006-01-05

Initial reports to the Miyako Jima City were that a strange vessel was sailing in local waters.

The Hirara Coast Guard station dispatched a patrol boat Saturday to the Higashihen-Nazaki, where it found a Taiwan fishing boat in Gusukube Ocean waters. Hailed and ordered to stop, the boat tried to escape. Ten ships were called in by the 11th Maritime Agency to surround the fleeing vessel, but still the Taiwan captain raced on. He crashed his vessel into a Coast Guard ship, then began zigzag movements before crashing into a second boat.

Twelve hours and 200 kilometers in the chase later, the Hirara Coast Guard vessel got close enough for one of its patrolmen to jump aboard the Taiwanese vessel and force it to stop. The captain and six crew members were arrested and charged with fishing in Japanese waters. The Taiwanese boat captain paid the fine, and the Coast Guard set the ship free.
