Search under way for missing fishing vessel

Date Posted: 2006-01-05

Planes and ships are now in a tenth day of searching for a long line fishing boat that disappeared in Yaeyama Islands waters.

The Morimaru, a 4.9 ton fishing boat belonging to the Yaeyama Fishermens Association, vanished while on a fishing mission not far from Ishigaki. Two men, Koritsune Kinjo, 40, and Taoki Doi, 20, were aboard the tuna boat.

The Coast Guard Safety Agency in Ishigaki City says they’ve had as many as ten ships and five aircraft involved in the search, but they’ve spotted nothing. Coast Guard investigators say the Morimaru had sent messages to another fishing boat using a wireless radio, so they know at least one of the men is alive.

Attempts to contact the Morimaru have failed. Officials say they have received no answers, which they consider strange as they know the radio aboard the boat was working.
