US Marines run amok; four arrested in three incidents

Date Posted: 2005-12-29

First they got drunk, then they became obnoxious and caused damage.

That describes how Marines behaved in separate incidents in Naha, Ishikawa and Okinawa City over the weekend. A 21-year-old Marine was charged with trespassing after he wandered into a Kin Town residence, then laid down and went to sleep.

Eric Basaldalibevero had been drinking, and police say hed entered through an unlocked door early Christmas Day. The 71-year-old homeowner at first thought the snoring man was a member of her family, but called police after realizing he wasnt. Investigators say Basaldalibevero had been drinking at a nearby bar, and apparently got lost as he tried to go back to the base.

Incidents in Naha City and Okinawa City pitted Marines against taxis. Okinawa City Police busted Justin Ratliff of Camp Hansen after he damaged the light on a taxi roof. The 20-year-old was in Chuo when he saw the taxi waiting for a customer. Rejected by the taxi driver, Ratliff reportedly went into a rage and began hitting the light on the roof.

Only hours earlier, Naha Police found themselves arresting Christian Gutierrez of Camp Kinser for similar damage to a taxi in their jurisdiction. In addition to the 22-year-old Gutierrez, they arrested his buddy, Carmelo Reyes, 25, on charges of interfering with the arrest. Police say both were drunk when Gutierrez damaged the roof of a taxi in the downtown Kumoji District. Both GIs deny the charges.
