Mainland Governor asks Tokyo to reject troop realignment plan

Date Posted: 2005-12-29

Three months before it’s supposed to become a final document, Kanagawa Prefecture’s governor is demanding the central government reject the agreement to realign US troop strengths and facilities.

Shigefumi Matsuzawa has asked the Foreign Minister, Taro Aso, to revise the realignment plan, and not to allow it to go into effect as written. Matsuzawa says he wants the foreign minister to come up with a new plan that will prove more acceptable to Japanese communities.

The Kanagawa governor says the new agreement, as written, does not protect the rights and interests of local communities, and “does not reduce the burden of hosting American bases”.
