Sunday thunderstorm causes flash floods

Date Posted: 2002-06-23

According to reports from prefecture fire stations 76 residences in Okinawa City experienced flash floods with the water level rising above the floor level. In Chatan and Kitanakagusuku, 37 houses were flooded. Chibana, Ageda and Kubota were also hit hard with 56 houses flooded.

Hija River in Kadena Town broke its banks forcing a family of five to seek shelter in Okinawa City Hall, as the water broke their house.

Some flood victims had a finger to point. “I have lived here for 39 years, and my house has been flooded only once before, during last year’s typhoon. And now again although there’s no typhoon even in sight this time. I believe it’s all the road construction that’s going on around here. They pour concrete all over the place and that’s why water has no way to go to the river or to the ocean. Instead, it comes into my house. The government has to do something about it,” a Kadena Town resident stated.
