Politicians argue Futenma issue hurts their reelection chances

Okinawa politicians say the Futenma relocation issue is contentious and could keep them from getting reelected.

A group of Okinawa Prefecture Assemblymen meeting with US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Joseph Donovan in Naha reminded him there is great opposition to the new airfield.

“Local communities are strongly urged,” they stressed, and said if the plan to move Futenma to Camp Schwab is approved, their chances of winning the Nago City mayoral election in January is slim. They predicted the issue could strongly influence next fall’s gubernatorial election as well.
