Embassy stands firm on troop moves issue

Date Posted: 2005-12-15

Calling it a ‘package’, the American Embassy has told an Okinawa newspaper the agreement on US troops realignment stands as a single, complex document.

“Many pieces are included,” the US Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission told the Ryukyu Shimpo. “Various issues all come together to make up a single picture.” Joseph Donovan says the process will be complex, and will take time to move forward on all points. He says the October 29th agreement is neither an interim nor final report, yet says he foresees few changes as it moves toward adoption next March.

Futenma will not leave Okinawa, Donovan says, noting the concept was extensively discussed over the past year. He says both current and future security considerations require the base to remain on Okinawa. The Embassy leader says Henoko is the place for Futenma’s replacement, but made no specific points on the Camp Schwab plan now contained in the document.
