Wily run-away rescued by Japan Coast Guard

Date Posted: 2005-12-15

A 230 kilogram calf who wasn’t thrilled by being loaded into a container on Miyako Island made a run for it, and nearly got away.

The calf was being transferred from a truck to a container at Hirara Harbor when he made the break. “Help us please,” was the call from the rancher. “Our expensive calf has fallen into the ocean.” The Coast Guard’s Safety Agency responded with seamen in a rubber boat.

The Y400,000 calf was spotted “swimming like a dog” in the waters several hundred meters from the harbor. The Coast Guard reports the calf was fast, and it took quite a long time to catch the animal. “We have never seen a calf swim,” said one rescuer. “and we often recover animals.”

The owner says he’d called to the calf “stop, stop. Don’t go away, please stop.” The appeals didn’t work, but “he never stopped and instead began going away faster and faster.” The calf was roped, and brought back to the harbor, where his date with the container was finally met.
