Single director sought to unify multiple Prefecture facilities

Date Posted: 2005-12-15

The Okinawa Prefecture plans to consolidate many of its facilities under a single operations director.

Okinawa Prefecture Assembly members just cannot agree on how to go about selecting the new director. They’ve been meeting this week to figure out the issues of public projects and civil construction, and how to pick a director for prefecture facilities. There are roughly 18 facilities owned by the prefecture, and all agree there needs to be a single overlord who can operate and manage the facilities, which include prefecture owned apartments and parks.

There is disagreement on how to approach the issue. “How shall we select the person?” asked on assemblyman. “How can we do evaluations whether a candidate is good for the director position or not.” He told other lawmakers they must first check details on each individual, and “then we will know it.” He said the average citizen has no idea how directors are selected.

A high end facility is the sprawling Okinawa Convention Center, which requires a director. Officials say they must make a decision at the next meeting, although they point out that only two of the prefecture’s 18 facility operators have actually been elected by the lawmakers.
