Two dummy missiles missing after Navy training exercise

Date Posted: 2005-12-08

A search is on for a couple of American missiles misplaced during a Navy training exercise off the Okianwa coast.

The 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters says the US Navy was conducting training off Minami-Daito Island east of Okinawa when it failed to recover two of its four-meter-long missiles.

The missiles are simulator types, and do not contain detonating powder or other explosive devices.
A Navy official says the missiles are empty, and are not dangerous. They say the 13 centimeter wide missiles are labeled with the words US Navy BQM74E near the tip of the 1.5 meter wing. The missiles were used in training exercises 70 and 120 kilometers southeast of Minami-Daito Island on Friday and Saturday.

The Coast Guard is notifying ships to be on the looking for the missiles, which may be floating in the water. Both the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard stress the missiles are not dangerous, but could confuse a passing ship. Ships and planes are searching for the missiles.
