Murder suspect denies involvement in crime

Date Posted: 2005-11-24

Yoko Higa is telling a Naha court she did not participate in the murders of two people last summer.
Higa and co-defendent Takezou Yonekura are charged with murdering a couple three months ago, then wrapping their bodies in blankets and disposing of them in a car on the island’s northside.

Police found the car in the Higashi Village area after the assasins failed in the attempt to dump the car over an embankment and into a ravine.

Making her first court appearance, Higa said “No, I didn’t kill them,” denying involvement and declaring her innocence. Her lawyer admits “she did help carry the dead body from the house (where the murders occurred) to Higashi Village brush.” The attorney says, though, that while Higa did help carry the body, it was because she was threatened by co-defendent Takezou.

Higa, the lawyer said, didn’t want to help. “Takezou told her that if she helped him kill, then carry the bodies away, he would pay her Y10~20 million ($87,000-$174,000).” The attorney said Higa had a lot of outstanding loans, and helped in order to get money to pay them off.
