Happy New Year in Indian Style

Date Posted: 2005-11-19

Devali, the Festival of Light, is India's largest festival. The three-day holiday runs Nov 3~5 each year, and is a time when all work stops country-wide. Everyone takes oil baths and buys new clothes to wear, then turns to food. Food is central to the celebration, with offerings to the gods, food gifts to the neighbors, and a special feast with your family. A symbolic candle, the earporam, is also lighted to pay homage to the memory of spirits which drove away the Nevil Nagara Suran. Devali is a happy celebration, because the good sprits drove away the bad. Women of the Okinawan Indian community celebrated Divali in their temple in Awase on Nov 1.
