Ishimine wins first Miyakojima election

Date Posted: 2005-11-19

Voters elected the former Hirara City mayor to be leader of the newly formed Miyakojima City.

The city was created by merger earlier this year, bringing together five municipalities on the prefecture’s most southern islands. The merger was called to slash operating costs as budgets across Japan tighten.

Akira Ishimine, 72, won the mayoral office by 413 votes over challenger Toshihiko Shimoji, 59. Ishimine had drawn support from the Social Democratic Party, Socialist Mass Party, Democratic Party, Communist Party and the Liberal League. His 18,033 votes lead him to victory over his opponent, who was backed by the Liberal Democratic and Komei parties.
