Bomb Scare gets lots of attention at Camp Kinser

Date Posted: 2005-11-04

A suspicious package being processed at the Camp Kinser postal mail sorting center brought Marines to a vigilant state a few days ago.

The Marines saw smoke wafting from a package at their handling center, and immediately dialed 9-1-1. The move brought fire trucks from both the Marine Corps Base fire department, and civilian authorities in Urasoe City were notified. Nearly a dozen vehicles surrounded the scene, where fire investigators finally determined the threat was from a leaking hair spray can.

Naha Defense Facilities Administrative Bureau officials say the response was routine, and the outcome well handled. DFAB confirmed Marine Corps statements there was no fire. The liaison system between DFAB, the local community and military bases was established a year ago to alert against accidents, and to better prepare for potential terrorist incidents.
