Typhoon Noguri fails to bring rainDate Posted: 2002-06-13 Typhoon Noguri formed off Taiwan coast and began moving towards Okinawa. Rather small in size, it dumped rain on Miyako, Tokashiki, Zamami, Tonaki, Kume and Aguni Islands, causing minor damage to some crops, mainly tobacco. The typhoon packed high winds and rain only very near its center. For example, Tokashiki and Zamami Islands that are within eyesight from Okinawa main island experienced some very heavy rains while most regions in Okinawa had none or very little. The strongest sustained winds were measured 37 m/s on Miyako and 32.8 m/s on Kume Island. The typhoon forced the cancellation of 26 inter-island flights. Inter-island ferry traffic was also affected inconveniencing some 500 passengers who were stranded in Naha. On the main island of Okinawa, typhoon Noguri disappointed almost everyone as it failed to bring much needed rain. Some local newspapers carried headlines declaring that gthe sky is joking with Okinawa.h Local gYuta,h or shamans have an answer. They say that people these days do not pray enough to traditional Okinawan Gods who are getting angry as a result. |
