Schoolmate locks friend in suitcase, then goes home

Date Posted: 2005-10-22

A tragic accident that killed a six-year-old boy has been made worse with information it need not have happened.

Initial reports were that the child locked himself inside a medium size suitcase in the family home while playing. Once inside, the boy discovered he could not get out, then died of suffocation. The childís body was found when his 32-year-old mother came home from work, discovered the suitcase near the door, and tried to move it.

An ambulance was called, but the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police now have learned the boy was not alone, but was with a neighbor friend. The friend has reportedly told officers he locked the six-year-old inside the suitcase while they were playing.

He told police that once his friend was inside the suitcase, he couldnít figure out how to open the suitcase to get him out. Apparently frustrated, the neighbor boy says he simply left and went home, leaving his friend to die.

An autopsy shows the boy died of a heat stroke. The elementary school first graderís parents say they had planned on discarding the old suitcase, but had not gotten around to it.
