First cloned cow in Okinawa born

Date Posted: 2002-06-13

The Okinawa Prefecture Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Section announced Tuesday that the first cloned cow had born at the Prefecture Livestock Breeding Facility in Nakijin Village. The calf was born on June 5, and is reportedly growing normally.

The staff at the breeding facility has been working on the cloning project since 2000. The project is scheduled to continue through 2004.

The Prefecture Livestock Breeding Facility Director Teishin Tengan said that the project is a part of a nationwide cattle cloning effort. gWe think that after we have perfected our techniques, this will have a very profound impact on the beef production business,h Tengan said. He said that currently there are 293 cloned cows born at 38 locations throughout the nation. One more cloned cow is expected to be born in Nakijin in October.

The Prefecture Livestock Breeding Facility officials expect the program eventually lead to a brand-name beef produced in Okinawa that will increase beef farmers' profits remarkably.
