New shipping route seeks to boost Okinawa-China trade

Date Posted: 2005-09-29

New products and better prices in the marketplace are expected soon as a new shipping route links Okinawa with principal Asia trading centers.

A new sea route connecting China with Tenshin, Oushima, Naha and Hong Kong launches October 24th, with Okinawa International Marine Company forging an alliance with a Chinese company.

The route is the second tying Okinawa to China; a route between Shanghai and Okinawa was opened last August.

An 8,000-ton cargo vessel, the Stella Ace, has been selected to ply the inter-Asian route. Okinawa’s International Marine Corporation will operate the company. Officials say the new route handled by the Stella Ace will slash transit time from two weeks to only three days for goods being moved between China and Okinawa.

Okinawans will benefit, the spokesman says, because “there are a lot of fresh foods, fruits, shells, vegetables and meats that will soon begin showing up on local store shelves.”
