Northern residents smile as Range 4 move announcement is made

Date Posted: 2005-09-26

Igei District residents have been furious about the Army’s Training Range Complex located at Range 4.

They’ve called it ill advised and dangerous, and began demanding its removal even before it was built.

This week they heard good news; Range 4’s training facility will be shifted to a more safe location at Range 16. They received the word during their daily protest demonstration outside the northern training camp.

More than three dozen residents of the small northern hamlet have staged 478 successive daily demonstrations against the numerous live fire training exercises, which take place close to the edge of the facility, adjacent to their public and private lands. The district chief said the move will make residents happy.

He was also pleased the U.S. and Japanese have expedited the shift to a new location, forecasting the new range can be complete in a year, instead of 2 ˝ discussed earlier. An elderly resident complained often during demonstrations about the daily pounding sounds of gunfire.
