No relief for Okinawa as U.S. talks mainland land returns

Date Posted: 2005-09-26

An Army depot in Kanagawa Prefecture is soon to be partially returned to Japanese control.

The report citing informed sources says the Army, which has been using Sagamihara Depot, will return the base to Japan in an effort to improve relations and gain support for a new military unit to be based at Camp Zama, also in Kanagawa Prefecture. The military wants to relocate the Army’s I Corps from Fort Lewis, Washington to Camp Zama to better coordinate military operations in the Pacific theater. I Corps is responsible for the region from Korea and Japan in northeast Asia south through the Indian Ocean.

The U.S. wants to return about 10% of the Depot, roughly 58 acres, to Japanese control. Japan had asked for the move during meetings earlier this year.
