Teen schoolgirls get warning against walking home alone

Date Posted: 2005-09-26

The first victim was an Urasoe High School student walking home after classes.

The girl was attacked by men with a knife. She received injuries to her thigh near Gusukuma High School. On the other side of the same school, four other female students were attacked. One fell attempting to escape the attack, injuring her leg.

Officials say all of the cases involved girls wearing school uniforms or school gymnastic uniforms. Each victim was walking alone. Witness statements all are similar, describing the suspects as about 20 years of old, wearing long shirts and pants similar to training or running suits.

Three incidents occurred the same evening. One victim said “I thought he was just running, a jogger. Then he hit me without a word.”

The school president says he and staff are addressing all students in the school, but notes the girls are uneasy. He says “we are asking they all go straight home with somebody, and that they not walk alone for the time being.”
