Electric car scores well in energy tight Okinawa

Date Posted: 2005-09-26

A new type automobile is gaining headway in the energy conscious local car market.

Rising fuel costs are making a compact electric powered car popular. It doesn’t use gasoline, and looks like a cross between a motorbike and a tricycle.

Promoters say the electric powered car is quiet, economical to use, and takes up little space in the home neighborhood. It is, they say, also very easy to drive. It is now being touted as the idea means of transportation for delivery people handling fast foods and newspapers, and is also a convenient way of getting to the office.

The battery powered vehicle charges for eight hours, then provides 50 kilometers of driving. It draws its power from a standard home electric plug. The company says it costs ¥6.70 per kilometer to operate a standard small car, but only ¥1.80 per kilometer for the electric-powered unit.

“We do like this car very much,” said one user. “It’s so nice to drive, has no cost, no voice and takes up no space.” Another satisfied customer echoed the sentiments, adding “It’s good for the natural environment and the earth. We need to keep the earth more clean and protected. This car can do it.”
