Poisonous imported frogs found on Taketomi

Date Posted: 2002-06-09

Big poisonous frogs of an African origin have been found on Taketomi Island, a small islet of a few hundred inhabitants that is a part of Yeayama Island group. Officials at Okinawa Prefecture Health and Environment Section say that this year three such frogs have been discovered on Taketomi. This is not the first time the animal has been found there as some were found back in 1986.

Officias don’t know exactly how the frogs found their way to Taketomi, but they speculate that someone brought them there as pets. “We estimate that there are only 14 or so of these frogs, and we have found no evidence that they have actually bred here,” an official at the Iriomote Wildlife Protection Center said. “However, we need to catch all of these frogs as they pose a great danger to other animals on the island. We need the help of local people in this and would appreciate if people would report us any sightings of these frogs.”
