Kin mayor gives green light to training area helipad relocation

Date Posted: 2005-09-17

Facing opposition from some within his own town council, the mayor of Kin Town is putting his support behind relocating helicopter pads from Gimbaru Training Area to a site at Kin Blue Beach.

Mayor Tsuyoshi Gima now says he “wants to accept the relocation, including on lands owned by private citizens.” He supports the move because Kin Town wants the Ginbaru Training area turned back to Okinawa control.

The 60 hectares training site is targeted for construction and reutilization projects beginning in 2007. Those projects include development of a health and medical facility, complete with biological specialties.

Town officials maintain it’s the only place for new development, but still would rather see the training area simply disappear. The town will hold a special meeting in the next week or two and explain to Blue Beach area residents in Namizato District how the benefits would outweigh burdens typically associated with hosting U.S. military installations and training facilites.
