OPG, private company donate money for Hurricane Katrina relief

Date Posted: 2005-09-17

The outpouring of support for the New Orleans disaster wreaked by Hurricane Katrina Aug. 29 has spread to Okinawa.

The Okinawa Prefecture Government presented the U.S. Consul General in Naha with a Y1 million donation several days ago, together with personal letters to the governors of Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana. “I am sending along my heartfelt sympathy (to the victims) of this disaster that goes far beyond what we’ve ever expected from a storm”, said Inamine. Thomas Reich, the Consul General, praised the Okinawa people for their support, and promises “to make good use of it towards victim relief.” He said the donation will provide encouragement to the many thousands of victims who are now struggling to rebuild their lives.

One of Okinawa’s largest companies followed suit with its own Y1 million contribution. The Gima Group presented a check to Reich, appealing for “a prompt restoration of the devastated disaster area.” Again, Reich praised Okinawan business leaders for their thoughtfulness.

Officials say this is the first time any Okinawa business has contributed to a foreign disaster such as a hurricane.
