Taxi company sends drivers unique ‘buckle up’ message

Date Posted: 2005-09-01

Boggi, nattily sporting a captain’s cap, sits at the curb of Yafuso Street in Urasoe City each day, urging drivers to “please fasten their seat belts”.

Passing motorists say they’re inspired by Boggi’s cheery smile each day, as well as the equally alluring smile of his girlfriend, Nabii. Drivers say they do often get in a hurry and forget to fasten the seat belts, and the reminders are welcome.

The idea of putting Boggi outside the Urasoe Taxi Company offices was the brainchild of its director, Yasunori Tedokon. There’s one thing that makes the whole idea very special.

Boggi, and girlfriend Nabii, are dogs! Collies.

Yasunori said he was given Boggi by the Urasoe Police Station, and as he watched the dog he observed Boggi enjoyed sitting on the street watching the cars. That gave him the idea to put a sign in front of him encouraging safe driving and the ‘Fasten Your Seat Belt’ reminder. He began the practice with the nine-year-old Boggi last year.

Nabii came into the picture this Spring, when it was decided Boggi needed a girlfriend. Nabii is only a year old, but although smaller looks like her boyfriend’s twin. They share the sidewalk each day, smiling at drivers. “I love to come to see these two dogs,” said one driver. “I drive to this street everyday to say hello to them. They wave their tails so much to me.”
