International women’s club Looking for new members

Date Posted: 2005-08-20

A five-decades old organization dedicated to women’s issues in the international arena is renewing itself in a search for new members.

The Okinawa International Women’s Club wants to renew relations with old members, and recruit new candidates, at a welcome coffee on August 31st. The coffee session will meet at the Butler Officer’s Club. The non-profit organization organized in 1953 is open to all women, regardless of whether with the military, DODDS, a spouse or a civilian. The group’s goal is learning and fostering understanding of foreign cultures.

The OIWC has a record of assisting those in need within the community. It meets monthly, with luncheons alternately hosted by the Japanese and American “foreign side”. Cultural groups also meet regularly to share interests about international living, customs and culture.

While cultural groups make crafts for sale during OIWC’s annual fundraiser, the Christmas Bazaar, other activities include cooking classes, craft shows, themed luncheons and tours both on and off the island. Members say there’s no better way for women to be more informed about Okinawa than by joining OIWC, and say it promotes new friends and “everlasting relationships”.

Regular meetings are held monthly at the Laguna Garden Resort Hotel, next to the Okinawa Convention Center in Ginowan. The next meeting is September 6th, 11am. Off-base luncheons cost Y2,800, while on-base luncheons are $15.

Membership dues are Y3,000. Welcome Coffee reservations can be made through Gale Rodgers at rodgers2@rapid-link.ne.jp.
