Cell phone technology expands available functions in Okinawa

Date Posted: 2005-08-20

Cellular telephone customers are always learning about new features available, but the latest to hit Okinawa is revolutionary.

Ryubo Department Store Group and Family Mart convenience stores are teaming with “EYY”, a new business plan that allows cell phone users to do internet banking, in addition to making purchases with the handheld unit. The internet prepaid banking system allows customers to use a pre-paid IC Card or their phones to do shopping and make purchases. In a nutshell, developers say, a user simply faces the cell phone against machines geared to interface, then make the transaction.

The option utilizing the same system is already available in mainland Japan. Ryubo Department Stores and six other companies say this program will even allow bank deposits via the internet. The prepaid money system has been operating by Tokyo Bit Wallet Company, which took the idea from All Nippon Airways’ Edy Card. NTT DoCoMo’s cell phones’ database connects to the internet system.

In Okinawa, 350 tourist facilities and Family Mart convenience stores can be used for the new cell phone shopping.
