Typhoon progress period extended to 72 hours

Date Posted: 2002-06-09

As the typhoon season approaches, Okinawa Meteorological Observatory announces that beginning June 1, they will track and forecast approaching typhoons from further away. The observatory will all track the typhoon longer after it has passed Okinawa. The information will be published on local TV channels. The new system that will track typhoons 72 hours is specifically aimed at helping public safety and seafarers. According to previous rules typhoons were tacked only 48 hours.

Although the observatory admits that predicting the typhoon’s course 72 hours in advance is not very accurate, officials say that the advantages to the public safety are obvious. They say that they are able to predict the typhoon’s course during next 72 hours with about 70 percent accuracy.
