Woman finds severed fingertip in rice ball

Date Posted: 2002-06-09

A woman bought more than she could chew when she bought a rice ball for her lunch at a 24-hour Lawson convenience store in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. While eating the rice ball she bit into something suspicious that turned out to be a one-centimeter long human fingertip. The woman reported to police around 7 p.m. Friday that she had found a piece of flesh in the rice ball after biting into it and sensing something unusual in her mouth. A doctor later confirmed the object was a fingertip.

The police investigation found that there had been an accident at the plant that cooked the rice balls and they apparently failed to recover the tip after a plant worker cut a finger. Officials ordered Nihon Fresh Delica's Sendai plant that had produced the rice ball to suspend its business and recall some 64,000 rice balls from the market. Managers at the plant told police that a pressing machine had injured one of its factory workers. The company immediately discarded dozens of rice balls after the accident, but the right-hand index fingertip, around 1.2 cm long, apparently got into a rice ball that was shipped.
