Upcoming international war games use Ryukyus scenario

Date Posted: 2005-08-17

A first ever military exercise is being planned around a combat scenario encompassing attacks on southern Japanese islands.

Code named Yamasakura, the joint Japanese Ground Self Defense Force and United States Army exercise will focus on a war game scenario that shows attacks threatened or executed on Japanís southwestern and other small outer islands. The mock battle will be conducted in Kumamoto Prefecture, drawing Ground Self Defense Forces, Marine Self Defense Forces, Air Self Defense Forces, and the Western Army controlling the Ground Self Defense Force.

On the American side thereís be the Armyís I Corps based from Ft. Lewis, Washington, and the 3rd Marine Division.

Officials say the joint training exercise is designed to strengthen training relations opportunities with the Marine Corps. It also cites an increased need to upgrade defenses in light of recent Chinese military activities. China has challenged Japanese claims to some outer islands, such as Senkaku Island.
