Assembly council says no to plan for moving Futenma aircraft to Kadena AB

Date Posted: 2005-08-05

Assemblymen from the three communities which surround Kadena Air Base have banded together to unanimously oppose plans to move Marine Corps elements into their neighborhood.
The nonpartisan assemblymen who make up the Tripartite Assemblymen Liaison Council have taken a stance against the plan during a meeting in Okinawa City. They don’t want the Marine Corps helicopters shifted to a Kadena, where there’s talk of creating additional facilities to accommodate the aircraft. They plan to visit Tokyo next week to raise the issue, and also intend on visiting the Okinawa governor’s office and the Naha Defense Facilities Administrative Bureau. They argue that Kadena’s already in a “highly dense” operational mode, and say adding helicopter units to the skies over their communities pose a great danger.
