Local high school band captures international title a second time

Nishihara High School went international and won. The 101-member band swept top honors at the 15th Annual World Music Competition in the Netherlands, winning both the marching show and marching style gold medals. The Okinawa band had accomplished the same feat at the Competition four years ago. Nishihara’s teens blew past 141 other high school marching and show bands to win the titles. They performed Okinawan music as part of their repertoire. The song ‘Flower of Endou’ won gold, first prize, in the show contest. The Nishihara performance also included music from Star Wars and New York Fantasy. They played to multiple standing ovations during a pair of late July performances. The team’s captain said “we were really persuaded and motivated by the unusually tense atmosphere, but the audience gave us such a big hand. It made us,” he said, “become more and more hot, and made us play even better.” The grand champions will be performing locally in coming weeks.
