Race junkies stand in line to register for Fall marathon

A 58-year-old Yomitan man wanted race jersey with the number 00001. To get the coveted Naha Marathon number, he stood in line for nearly a day and night, waiting. Hiroshi Kumano says “this is my 10th year for the marathon, and when I heard registration had started, I came right down to get the first jersey.” His patience paid off as he waited at the Omoromachi Okinawa Times Building offices. Hundreds were there, but he was first in line. The 21st annual Naha Marathon takes place in early December, but registration for the event, which draws thousands from across Asia and around the world, is now in progress. Runners can complete registration procedures at the Naha Marathon Committee Office, or at any bank or post office where Okinawans make their normal transactions. August 13th is this year’s registration deadline at Okinawa offices. Registration by mail remains open through September 30th. Shouichi Matsuda, 62, says age isn’t deterring him from running again. “This is my 17th try to run. Today is the start time for my training,” he says. “I’m going to practice every day.
