Ex-policeman held for stealing knife

Date Posted: 2002-06-09

A former police officer was arrested after a neighbor noticed that he had intruded in the house of a local waste disposal plant owner in Miyako Island. Upon their arrival at the scene, police arrested Kiyotaka Shimoji, 53, a former policeman. They found a large kitchen knife at his possession and concluded that Shimoji had taken the knife from the house. He is held on suspicion of theft. The police are continuing questioning Shimoji as they suspect he had other motives than just take the knife.

The industrial waste disposal facility in Miyako has been the object of big controversy after the facility started spewing noxious fumes after catching fire last year. Local residents have constantly complained about the fumes, and an inspector that the prefecture recently sent to investigate the complaints concluded that the facility is emitting alarming amounts of dioxin that could pose a health hazard to local residents. According to Miyako police, Shimoji has so far kept silent and refused to explain why he entered the house.
