Domestic violence case increases concern Okinawa policy makers

Date Posted: 2005-07-29

Abuse from spouses, boyfriends and girlfriends is often an unreported crime, and that’s worrying Okinawa government leaders.

The Domestic Violations Assailant Policy Section knows the numbers are bad, with countless undisclosed incidents of physical, mental or sexual abuse coming at the hands of partners most would expect the be compatible.

They’re already looking at 688 victims this year, with 710 assailants believed to have done the damage. The Domestic Violence Assailant Policy Section says there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of cases still going unreported. Officials say the think 80% of the domestic violence cases are going unreported.

Research being conducted by the Domestic Violence task force says there are many reasons being given for keeping the incidents hushed up. Some 22% of the victims told officials it was partially their fault, while another 28%, mostly women, say they didn’t report the violence “because he promised not to do it again.”

Sixteen percent told authorities they were both wrong, so it shouldn’t be reported, while another 19% tried to resolve the violence and anger issues between each other. Seven percent said dismissing the abusive partner from the mind was the way to make it go away, while 8.5% physically separated. Only two percent went for counseling and advice from a specialist.

Sexual and mental abuse victims often cannot sleep or are irritated. That 10% of respondents told researchers they often are irritated and then become nasty to their own children. That’s what really worries the Domestic Violence Assailant Policy Section. They want more public education, erasing the stigma and making it easier for victims to understand it isn’t their fault, so they’ll step forward to report the violence and get help.
