Inconvenience, traffic jams end with reopening of Kadena gates

Date Posted: 2005-07-09

After months of detours and using alternate gates, workers, residents and guests to Kadena Air Base are finally finding relief to their frustrations.

Kadena Gate 2 reopened shortly after midnight today, and Gate 1 on Highway 58 will reopen at 4pm tomorrow. Both gates had been closed to facilitate additional traffic lanes, security enhancements and construction of new visitor centers.

Gate 2 had been closed seven months, while Gate 1 was shut down for five months.

Kadena engineers say they expect the new renovations to decrease traffic congestion by 20%, while improving base security.

As Gate 2 reopened, Kadena officials closed Gate 5 to all traffic. As Gate 1 reopens, Gate 4 will permanently close late in the evening.

Construction of the two new visitor centers is not complete, and visitor passes will still be issued separately. Officials say visitor passes for pedestrians will be issued at the Pass and ID office outside Gate 2, and at the guard box at Gate 1.
