Guidelines for Naha Monorail station areas unveiled

Date Posted: 2002-05-28

Naha City Monorail Station Area Development Association (KSP) held a meeting, Tuesday to set the guidelines for the basic policy. According to KSP Chairman, Ryukyu University Professor Kiyoshi Uema, the first phase of the construction would cost 37 billion. The basic planning of the project will be finalized in August this year. Of the 37 billion, 9 billion will come from the coffers of the central government in Tokyo. Land sales and other local sources will finance the rest.

Each station area has appointed members to the Development Planning Committee that is chaired by Kosei Koja. According to Koja, the planning committee has divided the monorail in four areas for major development; Naha Bus Terminal, Southern Okinawa Prefecture Union Hall, Jichi Kaikan, and Asahibashi area. The plan envisions each area with large buildings up to 10 floors high that house hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and apartments. Monorail?s Asahibashi Station and Naha Bus Terminal would be connected by a covered walkway that would also connect other existing and planned buildings in the area creating a business center. Five companies interested in the plan have reportedly contacted the KSP for more details. The monorail construction will be completed in March 2003, and the committee envisions beginning the development of the station areas.
