Ship’s captain interrogated after running his ship ashore

Date Posted: 2005-06-24

A maritime accident earlier this year at Nakagusuku New Harbor has a ship captain being considered for punishment.

The April incident came as a Japanese Navy ship ran aground while entering the harbor. The ship struck the rocks and suffered a 10cm crack and a 40cm scratch to the hull. The captain has been called before the Hiroshima Prefecture District Prosecutor’s Office to explain.

Public affairs officials say the “captain made a mistake because he couldn’t recognize the destination in the new harbor. This kind of accident is very unusual.” The official noted the ship navigator is also being investigated. The men are quoted as saying “we didn’t get sleepy or anything. We were not sick.”

The warship is now undergoing repairs in Hiroshima. Officials say they don’t know if the ship will return to Nakagusuku Harbor.
