Wildlife protected by mongoose program

Date Posted: 2005-06-04

Dozens of mongoose have been captured within a U.S. military training area as part of a wildlife preservation program.

Okinawa officials say the program begun last June between the Japanese government, the Okinawa Prefecture government and the U.S. military is designed to protect endangered species. They say the initial months have been a success, with reported captures of 133 mongoose and four wild cats.

The Okinawa Rail, the Yanbaru Kuina, is often sought and killed by mongoose. Since the new program began last year, 1,184 mongoose have been captured, including 53 in Kunigami, Ogimi and Higashi Villages.
