Prime Minister to join upcoming Battle of Okinawa ceremonies

Date Posted: 2005-06-04

Japan’s Prime Minister is indicating he will lead the Japan delegation to June 23rd ceremonies commemorating the end of the Battle of Okinawa.

Sources close to the Prime Minister say Junichiro Koizumi will participate in the 60th anniversary events of the Battle of Okinawa, which turned out to be the final battle of World War II. The ceremonies are being conducted at Peace Prayer Park by the Okinawa Prefecture Government.

More than 200,000 were killed during the three-month battle in 1945, including about one-third of Okinawa’s 450,000 inhabitants. American and allied military veterans organizations are also planning ceremonies to recognize the event, and to honor the war dead.
