Onna beach rules to take effect from June 1

Date Posted: 2002-05-28

Onna Village will become the first local community to enforce rules concerning the use of public beaches. The new rules will take effect from June 1. The village assembly set the rules after extensive discussion with prefecture and police officials. They also heard opinions from the local Chamber of Commerce and various civil organizations.

The new rules that are aimed at improving public safety prohibit going to the beach when a typhoon warning is in effect. It imposes fines for people found to be noisy or behave violently or threaten other beach goers. Taking sand from the beach is specifically forbidden. The village can also charge a user fee from people visiting the beach. Using spear gun for fishing is prohibited, as is bringing such a gun or spears or harpoons to the beach.

The new regulations apply for specified 15 public beaches within Onna Village, and they will be identified with signs stating the rules. Onna Village Mayor's office will be in charge of enforcing the rules with the help from local police.
