Police lab technician tells court suspectís semen matches rapes

Date Posted: 2005-05-27

The semen samples from rape suspect Dag Allen Thompson are positive matches to samples taken from victims in two separate rapes.

That is the testimony in Naha District Court by an Okinawa police laboratory technician who ran the tests. Minoru Iha said he confirmed the blood type of the alleged rapist in both cases, one last August and an earlier rape dating back to June 1998. The semen tested confirmed A positive blood, the same as the 31-year-old former Marine now charged with rape and burglary in both cases. Iha said all tests except one were fully confirmed, while one sample was an inconclusive mix of semen and body fluids. That sample was from the 21-year-old Chatan victim in last summerís incident.

Thompsonís defense attorney has blasted the technicianís competence and evidence handling, leading to testimony from a second technician who handled the samples for DNA testing.

Masanobu Omine will return to the stand today to continue his testimony, which will explain how the DNA profiles were accomplished.

Thompson remains in jail during the trial, which moves into its Naha District Court ninth session today.
